Workshops A
Monday June 25, 2018

13.00 - 15.00
Establishing & Managing a Dedicated Estimating Group

While every Utility, Engineering company and Contractor is aware of the importance of producing accurate estimates, the ‘Utility Estimator’ is still not an industry standard in this field.

However, building dedicated departments to handle estimating responsibilities is something that more and more utility companies are starting to see real time gains from, and motivation is growing to find ways to follow their lead.

With this intention, this workshop will:

  • Explore the benefits of using specialized estimators, and how an estimating department can add value to a corporation
  • Outline a structure for a central estimating group that effectively integrates with other departments
  • Highlight potential challenges and concerns for establishing a new department, and outline ways to successfully combat these

Workshop B
Monday June 25, 2018

15.30 - 17.30
Hiring & Training Staff to Foster Quality Estimators

Experienced estimators are extremely hard to come by in the utility industry, and therefore it is often difficult to hire and retain staff. Teams must now find new talent, explore ways to effectively train staff, and ensure that, with the rate of retirement in the construction industry set to hit record highs, their department does not lose valuable knowledge and expertise.

This workshop will focus on:

  • Identifying skills sought in new recruits, desirable to create quality estimators
  • Benchmarking different approaches to training staff and comparing the efficiency of internal and external training schemes
  • Establishing a framework for developing staff that will provide quick and efficient transferal of skills, and ensure retention of skilled estimators
